Horatio's Garden

Horatio’s Garden creates and cares for beautiful accessible gardens in NHS spinal injury centres.

Horatio’s Garden is one of the National Garden Scheme’s gardens and health charities – receiving funding for work which promotes the physical and mental health benefits of gardens and gardening. The National Garden Scheme has been supporting Horatio’s Garden since 2015 and has donated over £770,000 to-date to help the charity create and care for beautiful accessible gardens in NHS regional spinal injury centres. In spring 2019, the National Garden Scheme committed funding for the completion of all eleven gardens across the country and in 2025 donated a further £110,000.

Maggie's

Maggie’s offer the best possible support free to anyone with cancer and their families who walk through their doors.

For each centre, architects and interior and landscape designers work closely together to ensure a strong connection between the outside and inside space.

In 2025 the National Garden Scheme made a donation of £125,000 towards Maggie’s gardens. The National Garden Scheme is aiming to donate £1 million over the next ten years to support people with cancer.

Army Benevolent Fund

The National Garden Scheme has funded the Army Benevolent Fund’s horticultural-related assistance to soldiers and veterans since 2010 with donations totalling over £880,000. During 2025 a donation of £80,000 supported seven individuals to take courses in tree surgery and landscaping, and provide support for home adaptions and wellbeing. It also supported five charity partners who provide horticultural services to those in need including providing communal spaces where they can practise horticultural skills and improve their wellbeing through horticultural therapy.

Other Gardens and Health beneficiaries

Each year additional smaller grants are made for one-off projects. In 2025 these supported the John King Brain Tumour Foundation, Cancer Help Preston and The Country Trust. New beneficiaries named at the end of 2025 include: Crossfire Trust, Northern Ireland; King’s College Hospital; Grow, Sheffield; Grangeway Community Garden; Green Hub, Surrey; Douglas House (Turning Point); Healthy Minds; Mount Vernon Cancer Centre.

We also give grants for community gardening projects that support the wellbeing of local communities and groups through both our Community Garden Grants and our NGS Elsie Wagg (Innovation) Scholarships with the QICN.

You can read more about these in our recent Impact Report.
